Penpal POC connects system-impacted people of color with others in the community through the power of writing. The program creates space for progressive conversations about life beyond direct or indirect system involvement, where direct system impact refers to individuals who have personally experienced the effects of these systems. Through culturally relevant topic prompts, participants engage in meaningful dialogue, share their lived experiences, and build connections rooted in understanding and solidarity. The program also encourages participants to reflect, imagine new possibilities, and advocate for opportunities to reform systems that have impacted their communities.

Lirio Pelayo

Program Chair

Lirio Pelayo is from Lynwood, CA and currently resides in West Covina, CA. Lirio completed their Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. They joined Psyches of Color to expand their knowledge and experience in mental health. They wanted to explore the variety of programs and ways to support families in need, especially those who have been system impacted. They are also passionate about helping individuals with career development and building confidence as they transition into adulthood. Their goal is to make a meaningful impact by supporting those in need, ensuring people know they are not alone, and serving as a voice of encouragement and care.

Erica Reynoso

Youth Program Chair

Erica Reynoso is from Lynwood, CA and currently resides in Compton, CA. Erica obtained their high school diploma from Compton Early College High School and recently began their college journey at California State University, Long Beach to obtain their Criminal Justice degree. They joined Psyches of Color to gain more experience and knowledge across different fields of psychology. This opportunity allows them to explore which areas interest them most while also developing their social, leadership, and public speaking skills through collaborating and communicating with new people.
